Act Accordingly

Writer's picture: Leah LandryLeah Landry

A few years ago, I was struggling to remember who I was in the eyes of Christ.  Actually, I was struggling with my identity as a whole, not only in God’s eyes, but also in my own.  Eventually I made a list of 40 biblical verses where God directly tells us who He says we are.  I’ve held on to that list, keep it close, and read it often when I am struggling with life on earth.

There were many times that rereading that list pulled me from the depths of my own negative thoughts and back into the here and now, with a new confidence and assuredness of my identity in Christ.  But there were times when that just didn’t seem like enough.  Let me explain.

Yes, I know I am strengthened with every power in accordance with His glorious might. (Colossians 1:11)

I know I am led by the spirit of God. (Romans 8:14)

I know I am confident. (1 John 5:14)

I know all of these things, but when I felt weak, or off path, or insecure I can remind myself of the I AM’s, but then what?

I found myself asking,

“Ok, I am led by the Holy Spirit.  Now what?”

Something was missing.  It felt like there was more that I needed to do than remember.

One morning, when this had been on my mind, I sat down with my morning reflection.  The scripture for that day’s meditation came from Sirach 3.  When I read it, two words in verse 1 caught my attention.

Children, listen to me, your Father; act accordingly, that you may be safe.

Sirach 3:1

Can you guess which two words made me pause?

Act Accordingly.

That was it, the missing piece.  It was the call to action after remembering who it is that gives me strength, loves me, makes me bold!  Yes, I need to remember who He says I am, but then I must use that to impel me into action.  I must act accordingly.

I now add those words to the I AM’s when I repeat them.  I must also let you know that sometimes I even add my name to the sentence to make it that much more personal.

I’ve modified my 40 I AM’s list, and I’m sharing it here with you in hopes that it gives you the same confidence and security in your difficult moments as it does me.  I have given a few examples of the conversations that happen in my head sometimes when I’m going through them.  Please use this list as you need in order to hear God’s voice and take action in what He’s asking you to do.

I am a child of God. (Romans 8:16) Put a smile on your face.  Leah, your dad is the almighty and ever living God.  Act accordingly.

Leah, you are redeemed from the hand of the enemy. (Psalms 107:2) Act accordingly! Tell those nasty thoughts and the enemy who creates them to take a step back and move to the foot of the cross.  You do not have to sit here, listen to those ugly things, or hold on to those ideas any longer.  Christ has redeemed you!

I am guided by the Lord.  (Psalms 107: 7) Act accordingly because you know the next step is already safe to take.  God has made this path for you.  Let Him lead you one step at a time!
